The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of construction activities and intermittent nightly lane closures on Route 2 in East Hartford, Hartford and Glastonbury, beginning on May 20, 2021, and extending into the 2024 construction season. Motorists should anticipate lane closures, nightly, from 7 PM to 6 AM on Route 2 between the I-84 on-ramps and Exit 7.
The intermittent nightly lane closures are necessary to facilitate construction work associated with safety and operation improvements being made on Route 2 from Maple Street and extending approximately 2.8 miles west to the vicinity of Pitkin Street.
The project consists of the rehabilitation of the underlying concrete pavement and resurfacing with a bituminous concrete overlay on the mainline and ramps as well as reconstructing the median to install a concrete barrier and to provide wider shoulders. The existing drainage system, guide rail system, overhead signs supports, and luminaires will be upgraded. Bridge improvements include bridge deck repairs, the complete replacement of two bridge decks, and upgrading concrete parapets to current design standards. Additionally, the Incident Management System will be upgraded along Route 2 and Route 3.
The project also includes the permanent closure of the ramps at Exit 5B to improve safety and traffic operations along this section of Route 2. Improvements associated with the ramp closures include extending the acceleration and deceleration lanes on Route 2 in vicinity of the ramp closures and providing intersection improvements on Main Street at the Main Street off-ramp (Exit 5A) intersection and at the intersection with Main Street at Maple Street/Broad Street.
DOT Project No. 0042-0317 was awarded to Empire Paving a cost of $61,786,112.84 on April 5, 2021, with an anticipated completion date of August 16, 2024.
